VR Overlays

vrOS ships multiple built-in overlays. Some are opened from the SteamVR dashboard, others are launched and managed from the Desktop Control Center.

vrOS Dashboard (SteamVR Dashboard Overlay)

vros-catnet-dashboard registers as a SteamVR dashboard overlay (is_dashboard = true). It is typically running in the background but hidden until you open it from the SteamVR dashboard UI.

Tools Overlay

vros-catnet-tools (overlay id vros-tools) is a general-purpose overlay for managing vrOS while staying in VR. It supports multiple tabs (overlays, settings, extensions, services, etc.).

You can launch it from the Desktop Control Center’s Overlays tab.

Other Built-In Overlays

Depending on your build/install, vrOS may also ship overlays such as:

  • HUD (vros-catnet-hud)
  • Keyboard (vros-catnet-keyboard)
  • Chat (vros-catnet-chat)

These are typically started/stopped from the Desktop Control Center.

Power User: Launch An Overlay From The Command Line

If you have a reason to launch an overlay directly, vros-launcher.exe supports:

  • --overlay=hud
  • --overlay=keyboard
  • --overlay=tools
  • --overlay=chat

Example:

vros-launcher.exe --overlay=tools
